"Kathy Doore is aptly named, as she opens DOORS of perception into Andean cosmology. Warning: you are in for a lot more than a touristy, sight-seeing trip with Kathy’s tour. You won’t escape feeling deeply touched by the amazing landscape, the fabulous, earthy, and spiritual guides (especially Maru and Vicky), in addition to Kathy, and a very full experience packed into two short weeks. This isn’t an “adventure tour”, but it is quite possibly the MOST amazing adventure of my life, both on a spiritual and experiential level. It is powerful. If you are open to experiencing a living culture that has ancient roots in the amazing Peruvian sky, by all means do whatever you can to GO! It has been two weeks since my return from Peru, and I’m still assimilating the spiritual experiences I had there. They continue to unfold, and I am confident that this is only the beginning. Thank you Kathy for making this spiritual trek possible." Peggy Bartlett, California, May 2010
A cautionary word about tours to Markawasi
Markawasi is a relatively new destination for foreign travelers. Several companies have popped up overnight offering tours to Markawasi on the internet. Some are more reputable than others. Use your best judgement when researching offers, especially if they seem to good to be true. Be sure to request recent letters of reference from fellow travelers who live outside of Peru. Be sure to follow-up before sending funds. A well-managed professionally run tour should include all camp facilities and provisions, all meals, and both bottled and purified water, porters and pack animals, and a knowledgable bilingual guide. Remember, there are no food services on Markawasi, no bathing facilities nor bathrooms on the plateau, and with plunging nighttime temperatures at high altitude, and a 2 1/2 hour hike down the mountain for provisions, ask how these issues will be handled. Is transportation included to and from Lima to the site, and if so, what type? Are the guides familiar with Markawasi? Is the equipment state-of-the-art and in good condition? How are medical issues and evacuations handled? Standard fare for a professionally run tour should include an itemized list of all services provided and full disclosure of booking procedures, policies, fees, and cancellation requirements.
It is entirely possible to run your own "self-guided tour" (as outlined in our book), by bringing gear or renting it in Lima, provisioning for meals before heading out, and hiring a local (Spanish-speaking) guide in the village of San Pedro at the base of Markawasi. The people of San Pedro are expert in getting you to the site safely, and seeing to your basic needs.
For the past 22 years we have worked exclusively with professionally licensed and regulated Peruvian Tour operators with exceptional qualifications and decades of experience. We believe that you should expect nothing less.
